Only 15 minutes by train from JR Sannomiya, Suma Beach is Kobe’s most popular beach. It is also easily accessible. Just take the south exit of JR Suma station, and the sand and water are right there! In previous years, when alcohol was sold on the beach by seasonal vendors, Suma Beach was filled with boisterous young people every summer. Recently, however, the beach has had a change of image and is now a place that families too can enjoy. Outside of the swimming season from July to August, it is visited mostly by locals and is not crowded at all. In addition to swimming, beach volleyball, surfing, and windsurfing are also popular activities here.
Right between the train station and the beach, there’s a hamburger joint called Grateful’s, open all year round, which is a fun place to grab a meal. In addition to its relaxing indoor area, Grateful’s also has outdoor and roof balcony seating with views of the beach. Prices are reasonable and the portions are generous.
There are a number of beach houses south of the station and within a stone’s throw of the beach. If you are interested in renting an apartment on the beach, as either a primary or secondary residence, check out this available apartment here:
