In the mountainous area between the Chuo and Kita wards is Kobe Municipal Arboretum, a great place to relax and enjoy nature with the whole family. Its huge number of hydrangea plants, which bloom in early summer and owe their bright blue color to aluminum ions and the pH level of Mt. Rokko’s soil, are especially popular with visitors.
Other highlights of the park include a pond full of water lilies. A small island in the pond, accessible by a wooden bridge, is a great spot for taking photos.
There’s also a souvenir shop where you can buy local handicrafts, food, ice cream, and drinks.
Perhaps the easiest way to reach the arboretum is by car, but there is also a free shuttle bus from Kita-Suzurandai Station, as well as a city bus that runs from the park to Sannomiya Station. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you could also hike there from Shin-Kobe Station. The hike takes about two to three hours, and you will need to wear hiking boots and be in generally good shape.
