Mikage, in Higashinada Ward, is an affluent neighborhood on the eastern side of Kobe. Popular with families with children and commuters to Osaka, it is much quieter than the bustling Sannomiya and Motomachi areas to the west. Gathered around the main station area are a few cafes, bakeries, and boutiques, but Mikage is mostly residential.
On the north side of the station, the shops thin out and the mountain slope begins. From here, the area is nearly exclusively residential. After only about a five minutes’ climb from the station, look back you’ll see the ocean. One reason for Mikage’s popularity is clear: many of the residences here boast amazing views.
Another reason Mikage such an attractive place to live is that, although it is centrally located in Kobe, the many parks, tree-lined streets, and proximity to Mt. Rokko means that the neighborhood enjoys a lot of natural scenery. There is plenty of shade for children to play under in the summer, and the air coming down from the mountain is clean and fresh.
